Week 1 Task - Design a New Species of Monster

Welcome to the very first Let's Write a Monster Book challenge!

Monsters, monsters, monsters. There are big ones, little ones, stripy ones, spotty ones, hairy ones, scary ones ...

Some books contain many species of monsters, for example Harry Potter has dragons, goblins, werewolves and many more. Whereas others focus on one kind such as The BFG, which is all about giants.

Some authors use monsters from myths and legends, such as ghosts, vampires and yetis. Others make them up, such as Julia Donaldson's Gruffalo. Occasionally, an author takes a mythical creature and changes it for his or her books, for example Roald Dahl's witches are clawed, toeless and bald, not at all like the sort that ride around on broomsticks in tall pointed hats.

Creative writing is most enjoyable when you get to be really imaginative. So let's make up some of our own brand new monster species. Then we'll tell the world all about them in our book.

Things to think about when inventing a new species of monster:
- What do these monsters look like?
- What do they smell like?
- What do they sound like?
- What is their most repulsive habit?
- What are their strengths and weaknesses?
- Do they have any special abilities?

Once you've invented your monster species, please write a description that is 150 words or less and email it to me. I will discuss some of the most interesting and funny ideas on our monster blog. Many of your ideas will go into our monster book.
