Week 2 Tips - Backstories

A backstory is a history created for a fiction character. A backstory can help you understand characters and why they are the way they are.

For example, the hero in The Troll Trap is Rufus Sebbleford. Rufus is a troll hunter and throughout the book we see him hunt a series of trolls. However, we know that the reason Rufus is obsessed with hunting trolls is that one climbed in through his bedroom window when he was five years, three-hundred and sixty-four days old. This is an example of a backstory.

Here's another example of a great backstory by Harry from Broadway Primary School in Rossendale.

'Penny smells a lot like coffee. This is because when she was a little girl, she had a pot full of coffee fall on her. It made her smell for life.'

When you're describing your heroes, think about their pasts and what may have happened to make them the way they are.

Here are some more examples:

- 'My hero is afraid of chickens because when he was little a chicken pecked his ice cream.'
- 'My hero is good at acting because his house has no TV so he has to put on a play every night.'
